Important update on oral contraceptives

Contraception alert: Because of the shortage of a key ingredient in oral contraceptives (ethinylestradiol) on the world market the supply of certain brands may be limited until the second half of 2019.

Affected brands include Minulet, Triquilar ED and Microgynon 20ED. Speak with your GP or pharmacist if this shortage affects you in order so you can plan ahead.

We are in the fortunate position to have very skilled doctors at Eleanor Clinic and offer long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). Mirena, IUD and Implant are not only some of the most effective forms of contraception. They also don’t depend on you remembering to take or use them. Where there’s nothing to remember there’s also nothing to forget.

Depending on which LARC product you chose your contraceptive needs are covered for 3-5 years. And if you would like to change to a different contraceptive option at any point or are wanting to become pregnant, they are easily removed and your fertility returns quickly.

Choice is great. But it also can be confusing at times. We are always happy to sit down with you and from all available options find the form of contraception that works best for you and your current circumstances.

Travel with Confidence – Book Your Travel Health Consult at Eleanor Clinic

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of planning your dream getaway — whether it’s soaking up the sun in Bali, exploring ancient temples in Asia, or going on safari in Africa. Travel opens the door to unforgettable experiences, cultural connections, and new perspectives. But before you zip up your suitcase, there’s one important step to ensure your trip is as safe and stress-free as it is exciting: a travel health consultation.

At Eleanor Clinic, we love helping our patients travel well. As your local accredited Yellow Fever vaccination centre, we’re fully equipped to support your travel health needs, wherever your adventure takes you.

Why Book a Travel Health Consultation?

Travel is joyful — but different destinations can come with different health risks. A travel health consult ensures you’re informed, protected, and ready to go.

You’ll meet with one of our experienced doctors for a tailored consultation, where we’ll discuss your itinerary, personal health history, and any recommended or required vaccinations. If you’d like to receive vaccines on the same day, just let reception know when booking, so we can also schedule you in with our nurse.

To make the most of your appointment, we recommend booking at least 6 weeks before your departure.

Travel Alert: Rabies Outbreak in Bali

Bali is a beloved destination for many Australians — but a recent outbreak of rabies in popular tourist areas such as South Kuta, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran Bay, Mengwi Province, and parts of Canggu is an important reminder of the value of travel health planning.

Rabies is a deadly virus that’s transmitted through the bite or scratch of infected animals — particularly dogs and monkeys. While Australia is rabies-free, the same can’t be said for many popular holiday spots.

This year alone, over 13,000 cases of rabies have been reported in Bali, with 25 tragic deaths. Sadly, many of these were preventable.

Peace of Mind with Rabies Vaccination

If you’re travelling to Bali or other high-risk areas, pre-exposure rabies vaccination is a smart step — especially for families, children, frequent travellers, or anyone seeking extra peace of mind.

The vaccine involves:

  • 2 doses, 7 days apart
  • An optional booster at 12 months for long-term protection (up to 10 years)

Going Further? We’ve Got You Covered

Planning a trip to Africa or South America? We’re proud to be an accredited Yellow Fever vaccination centre — and can provide all required and recommended vaccines for your specific destination.

Whether it’s Typhoid, Hepatitis, Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria prevention, or Yellow Fever, we’ve got you covered.

Let the Adventure Begin — Safely

Travel is one of life’s greatest joys — let us help you experience it safely. Book your pre-travel health consultation at Eleanor Clinic today and take off with confidence.

Call us or book online — and remember to mention if you’d like your vaccines done during the same visit.

Emergency Contraception

By Dr Felicity Dent
Specialised Women’s Health General Practitioner

Editor’s note: This article focuses on emergency contraception. Eleanor Clinic offers advice on all forms of contraception and family planning, including Implanon, Copper IUD and Marina insertion. Please make an appointment with your Eleanor Clinic GP to discuss the most suitable option for you.

Emergency contraception, often called “the morning after pill”, is commonly used to prevent a woman becoming pregnant after unprotected sex.

But did you know that emergency contraception comes in different types?

Fast facts about emergency contraception:

  • 85-99% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy
  • Does not protect against STI’s
  • Is available as 2 different sorts of single use pill and also as the copper IUD
  • If you choose the copper IUD you will have ongoing contraceptive cover for 5-10 years
  • Works best if used as soon as possible after unprotected sex, preferably within 24 hours, butcan be used for up to 5 days

The emergency contraceptive pill is available in 2 types, both available over the counter from pharmacies at relatively low cost. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you decide which is best for you. It works by preventing or delaying the ovaries releasing an egg, and it is around 85% effective at preventing pregnancy. If you have unprotected sex again after taking emergency contraception you may need another dose.

Side effects from the emergency contraceptive pill are generally mild and might include: a change in your next period, nausea, headaches, bloating and tender breasts.

REMEMBER: if your period is very light or more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test.

The emergency copper IUD is the most effective way of preventing unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex – it is 99% effective if used within 5 days. It also has the benefit of providing ongoing contraception for 5-10 years. An IUD is a small device that is inserted into the uterus by a trained professional, and it works by affecting sperm movement and making fertilisation of the egg unlikely.

In general copper IUDs can make future periods heavier and increase cramping, but there are other things to consider before making a decision – have a discussion with your doctor about whether an IUD is suitable for you.

We are generally able to insert copper IUDs at short notice at Eleanor Clinic.
Please contact our reception staff and let them know what you need.
